A sapphic reading of Emily Jeanne Brown’s Nina, told through movement, mirrors, and natural light.
I heard Nina as a sapphic love song. Francesca Woodman’s photographs informed the film’s blurred movement, obscured bodies, and intimacy within an interior.
In the image at 4:08, branches, loose hair, and fabric interrupt the rectangles of the windows and mirror. An apple and reflected woodland sit between Emily’s legs, suggesting forbidden queer desire. We held the composition in the edit long enough for those relationships to emerge.
I directed and shot the video in one day with available locations, materials, and natural light. Emily and I edited it together.
Colorist: Alexey Zavolokin. Edited by Lindsay Alexandra Carter and Emily Jeanne Brown.
